Treasure Hunting

I love spending time chewing on God’s Word, finding treasures in Scripture to help me grow in faith and live my life in a way that honors my Father. Through these “Thursday Thoughts,” I’ll share some of those treasures with you. My prayer is that you are encouraged to do some treasure hunting of your own.
The Bible is full of verses that tell us how wonderful Scripture is and all the benefits of meditating on God’s Word. I want to start this series of devotional studies by looking at an old friend and break it down phrase-by-phrase over the next few weeks.
"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." – 2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV
All Scripture Is Breathed Out by God
The first word we see is “all;” every word of Scripture is from God. Every word is breathed out by God. Some translations say, “all Scripture is inspired by God,” but I like the ESV translation used here. It reminds me that God’s word is alive. (Hebrews 4:12; John 1:1-2, 14)
God breathing out his word also reminds me of the Holy Spirit, who worked to inspire the men who wrote down the scriptures for us. The Spirit lives inside all born-again believers and helps us to understand what God has to say when we need to hear it. (2 Peter 1:21, John 14:26, John 16:13-14, 1 John 2:27, Psalm 25:8-9)
All Scripture is Profitable
Profitable is from the Greek word that means helpful or serviceable, advantageous or having value. Every word of Scripture can help us to grow in understanding and knowledge of God and his will for us. (2 Peter 1:3, 1 Timothy 4:7b-8)
Every word of Scripture has immeasurable value. (Psalm 19:7-11) In fact, God’s word is the most valuable tool we have as we seek to grow in our knowledge and understanding of the Lord, so that we can serve Him and glorify Him. It brings life, encouragement, shelter, and much more in addition to the four things we’ll be looking at here today.
