Seeing God's Glory

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.
Psalm 19:1-4a ESV

This beautiful psalm is one of my favorites, speaking powerfully about God's glory and how He blesses us through His word. It begins with David describing how God’s glory is declared by the skies. Whenever he looks at the heavens, everything he sees speaks to him of God.

What would David have seen? Sun, moon, stars, clouds, and the birds of the air. God created all of these. (Genesis 1:14-15, 20). The lights in the heavens not only give us night and day, but also mark the seasons and years for us. And there is nowhere on earth where these heavenly lights cannot be seen. Anywhere I go, I just have to look up to be reminded that God is always with me, and He is always in control, no matter what season of life I find myself in.

The heavens speak to me of God’s glory in many other ways. The vastness of the night sky reminds me of how BIG God is, bigger than all my difficulties. I see His majesty and am humbled by the thought that He chose to love me. The clouds remind me of the pillar of cloud that He used to guide the Israelites through the wilderness, which makes me thankful for His guidance in my life. I picture an eagle soaring through the skies and am encouraged by His promises to raise me up and to shelter me under His wings (Psalm 104:1, John 3:16, Exodus 13:21-22, Isaiah 40:31).

Think About:

  • How do the heavens declare God’s glory to you?

  • How do these verses speak to you of God’s character?
