For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. - Isaiah 9:6 ESV
Mighty God is such a powerful title of Jesus. Several things come to mind as I ponder this.
The Hebrew word “mighty” could also be translated strong, powerful, or valiant. Valiant is an interesting word, meaning possessing courage or determination. Jesus was certainly valiant; He showed great determination in going to Jerusalem to be arrested and crucified for our sin (Luke 9:51).
He is our strong and mighty God, our valiant champion who rescued us from our sin. Beautiful!
This title also speaks of His sovereignty.
The Mighty One, God the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. - Psalm 50:1 ESV
Jesus is over everything; He causes the sun to rise each day. One day everyone will acknowledge this and bow before Him. (Check out Isaiah 45:23, Romans 14:11, and Philippians 2:10.)
Finally, Mighty God reminds me that Jesus is vastly greater than all our enemies. And because of Him, we share in His victory.

Wow! This fact is hugely important. In Jesus, the war with all the troubles in temptation in the world has been already won. In my day-to-day life, I sometimes behave like I’m alone in my struggles and get discouraged. But remembering that Jesus, my Mighty God, is with me and has won the war gives me encouragement to persist. Because of Jesus’ victory, the everyday battles of life seem much more manageable.
… in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
Romans 8:37 ESV
Think About: How have you experienced Jesus, the Mighty God, in your life?
